Metallica Scholar: Mariah Mathews

Aiken resident Mariah Mathews is a Metallica Scholar enrolled in the Associate in Applied Science: Computer Technology program.

Course/Program:  Associate in Applied Science: Computer Technology-Programming

Age: 18

Employment: Apprentice at Savannah River Site

What does it mean to have tuition and fees covered?

“I think financially it’s great, but also mentally, it’s a lot of pressure relief so I can focus on these opportunities that are out there and I can do something with it. I don’t have to worry about, ‘I don’t have the money’ or ‘I have to work this and get that.’ I can just focus on what I want to learn.”

What interested you in the program?

“When it comes to programming, a lot of people say it’s math, which I like. And it’s a lot of logic. So, there’s no right answer, but there’s always a logical way of problem-solving, which I liked”

If you could thank Metallica and All Within My Hands, what would you say?

“I would say, I appreciate this opportunity. I think many people would appreciate it. Not many people know about it, but once they do, it’s appreciated because it’s an opportunity for people in the community to get out there and do what they want without having to feel the pressure of getting things in line, and that these opportunities are out there for them.”
