Erynn Black Staff Member of the Year
The Aiken Technical College Staff Member of the Year Award was a total shock and surprise to Lead Advisor Erynn Black.
“Getting this award was not on my radar at all! I enjoy my job, and I enjoy the people I get to work with, so being nominated and winning this award is the cherry on my sundae!” Black said.
Black has worked in higher education for 25 years and at Aiken Technical College for about 12 and a half years on and off as an English instructor. She has worked in the Lead Advisor position for the past 5 years.
She comes from a background of being of service to others, whether it's family, friends or the community. Growing up, Black said she learned valuable lessons from her family and has always been willing to serve as needed.
“I love helping new students begin their college education and find their path forward to a career and a passion that will drive them. I love helping non-traditional students who want to be a great role model for their children and maybe grandchildren – they understand and appreciate the education they are working on,” Black said.
English is Black’s first love, and she knows she has done a good job when students provide her with positive feedback and ask for book recommendations. Throughout her 25 years, she loves teaching most of all and has taught all levels of English as well as developmental reading.
Recently, Black came up with the idea of implementing the GEAR Guide, Guide for Enrollment, Advisement, and Registration for new students, current students, faculty and staff. The goal of the guide is to help new students alleviate some of the stress and anxiety as they become official ATC students.
“Helping students become college students is a skill I have been able to hone over the years. It brings me great joy to see our students walk onto our campus nervous and excited, and then I watch them cross the stage at graduation and go out to make good in the world,” Black said.
Black is a member of the South Carolina Technical Education Association, and the National Academic Advising Association. She frequently attends conferences and is an active member.
“Working in higher education is not as easy as many would expect. One must be dedicated and willing to help anyone who comes to you for assistance,” Black said.
