Aiken Tech student recognized for volunteer efforts
For DeAnna Dixon, volunteering and giving back is about putting action into what it means to care for others.
“We always talk about change. I want to help be the change. One smile at a time,” said Dixon. “Helping others is a reward in itself.”
Dixon, who is currently enrolled at Aiken Technical College, has spent more than 20 years serving in various capacities in the community. The efforts earned her recognition and an advocacy and volunteering award during the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Celebration on January 26. The event was a collaborative effort between Aiken Tech, the University of South Carolina Aiken, and community partners.
Dixon can often be found helping others no matter where she is—whether in Hawaii, California, or locally in the Aiken and Augusta area.
Dixon has participated in team efforts that have included providing brown bags of meals for people experiencing homelessness and cooking Thanksgiving dinners for those in need.
“I have had family and friends in similar situations. I have learned not to judge others’ situations but to love people back to life, to lend a helping hand. Kindness goes a long way,” said Dixon.
As a youth minister, she mentors youth, providing encouragement and guidance, and teaching Bible studies.
Community organizations she has partnered with throughout the years have included churches, schools, the Salvation Army, United Way, the Black Nurses Association, and the NAACP.
Her involvement hasn’t stopped there. As a student at Aiken Tech, she has supported activities through the Student Nurses Association, Christian Life Club, Student Government Association, Student Veterans Association, and the NAACP.
No matter the organization, activity, or location, volunteering is genuinely a part of who she is, said Dixon.
When asked what she enjoys most about volunteering, she stated: “Seeing them want to live again, smile, and be encouraged."
